Maritime Vessel Tracking and Management Systems

As the density of Maritime Traffic continues to increase, as the types and purpose of Maritime Vessels becomes ever more diverse, as the threat to environmental resources gains increasing popular and political emphasis and as threats to maritime sovereignty and international maritime safety increase, so does the need to know what ships are operating in specific areas, where those ships have been, where they are going, what they are doing and what they are carrying. Vessel Tracking and Management Systems (VTS) are the tools that national authorities, port owners and shipping owners are turning to assist them in developing and managing the Maritime Picture in their regions of interest.

What makes up a VTS?  A VTS typically will consist of a suite of sensors systems, a command and control software suite that provides tools by which operators develop and manage the maritime picture, a display system and a communications capability.
