Communications and Voice Switching

In the final analysis, the most sophisticated of Maritime Vessel Tracking and Management Systems is of absolutely no value if the operators are not able to “talk” to the traffic that they are managing.  Yet this critical capability is nearly always the last element to be considered in the design and implementation of a Maritime Vessel Tracking and Management System, or in some case it is forgotten all together and simply “bolted on” at the last minute.

The Communications and Voice Switching capability must be considered as a part of the overall system.  In anything but the most simple of one man operations, the Communications and Voice Switching capability needs to consider all aspects of communications including:

  • maritime VHF communications, channel management, frequency allocation and emergency response;
  • transmitter and receiver remote management and control;
  • internal and extended intercom and “hot line” management
  • strategic emergency communications management, hospital, fire services, police, customs and so on;
  • telephone management

The Communications and Voice Switching HMI must be intuitive and consistent with the overall system HMI.  Typically, for a reasonably sophisticated Maritime Vessel Tracking and Management System, the voice control and switching HMI will be integrated into the system HMI and will often appear as a separate window with a touch screen capability.  Alternatively the switching control interface will be integrated into the console furniture and ergonomically positioned.
